Easier Hikes
These areas all have trails that are very easy going as well as others that offer a variety of difficulty levels
Mt. Falcon Day Hike
(Easy - Moderate)
From $50/person
Just south of Red Rocks sits Mount Falcon Park. The park offers numerous trails of varying lengths with the summit of Mount Falcon sitting about 3.5 miles west, and a little over 1,700 feet above the Morrison trailhead. Great views abound throughout the park and there are a variety of options to choose from when it comes to trails.
Roxborough State Park Day Hike
(Easy - Moderate)
From $50/person
Roxborough State Park, located near the Rocky Mountain foothills, spans 4,000 acres and offers scenic hiking trails. Known for its unique Lyons Formation, the park features striking red sandstone spires and diverse wildlife, including deer, coyotes, and birds. It's a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts seeking natural beauty and tranquility.
Castlewood Canyon Day Hike
(Easy - Moderate)
From $50/person
This hidden gem southwest of Franktown offers sweeping views of the canyon, Pikes Peak, and the Front Range. At its heart lies the remnants of Castlewood Dam, which burst in 1933, flooding Denver with Cherry Creek. Trails wind around the canyon rim and along the creek, showcasing remnants of the historic flood.
Tougher Treks
All of these options are moderately challenging at the very least and some are extremely difficult, especially for those coming from lower elevations
Mt. Morrison Day Hike
(Moderate - Hard)
From $50/person
Right behind the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater sits one of my favorite hikes in the Denver area. Gain almost 2,000 feet in under 2 miles with ever improving views of Denver, Red Rocks, and the Front Range. This is a strenuous hike but it is some most bang for your buck. Plan for 3-5 hours to complete this hike and be prepared to be challenged with steep terrain, significant exposure, and a rock scrambling summit push that mimics the top of some much taller mountains.
Mt. Sniktau Day Hike
(Hard)
From $60/person
Drive to Loveland Pass at 11,990 feet for a 3.6-mile roundtrip hike. The trail gains 1,000 feet in the first mile of its 1,555 feet total. From the ridge, hike northeast to the 13,240ft (4,036m) summit. It offers great value with stunning views, passing mountain towns and Loveland Ski Area en route. Starting at the Continental Divide, the trailhead rewards with panoramic mountain views, and the summit is under two miles away. This strenuous hike reaches altitudes over twice that of Denver.
Barr Camp Overnight
(Hard)
From $200/person
Start your hike at 6600 feet on Barr Trail for 6 miles to reach Barr Camp, where you can stay up to four nights. Accommodations include tent camping, private cabins, composting toilets, and a creek (filtered water required). Additional charges apply for breakfast (pancakes) and dinner (spaghetti) prepared by camp caretakers. Many trails branch out from Barr Camp, offering hikes to Manitou Reservoir or the A-frame at 12,098 feet.
Summit Pikes Peak
(Hard)
From $150/person
Stay at Barr Camp and attempt to summit Pikes Peak over up to three nights. This challenging hike covers 24 miles roundtrip with nearly 7500 feet of elevation gain. Weather risks, like thunderstorms above treeline, can impact summit attempts. Multiple days increase the likelihood of success and aid acclimatization for those from lower elevations. The focus is on summiting Pikes Peak while basing at Barr Camp.
